The 60 year-old painter Joyce Gunn Cairns suffered from severe depression during early life. A lot of her depression stemmed from a contempt for her body that she found ugly and repulsive. Now, 30 years later, she has come to realised the impact creativity has had on her. By constantly drawing self-portraits she has both empowered herself to define her own shape and come to accept her body.
In this film i experimented a lot with super8 since it enabled me to physically disort the film reel in different ways. I also used stop-frame animation in a couple of sequences. The reason for using these effects was to try to convey the inner tumult of a mind on overload.
